A. Proett, Halliburton Energy Services Abstract: Formation Testers While Drilling (FTWD) tools have recently been introduced and offer an alternative to wireline testing. Several questions remain regarding the accuracy and repeatability of these measurements. First, the drilling environment is dynamic with hydrostatic pressure constantly changing. Invasion and the resultant supercharge effects can also be factors affecting FTWD measurements. Some FTWD tools offer the capability to perform pressure tests with the mud pumps on or off. Additionally, some FTWD use either inflatable packers or probes which perform very differently depending on the formation properties. The emphasis of this talk is to consider these factors and to use forward modeling sensitivity studies to demonstrate these effects over a wide range of operating conditions. Field data from the new GeoTAP tool is presented to demonstrate the applications of FTWD and provide verification for many of the simulated factors affecting the measurements.
Mark A. Proett received a BSME degree from the University of Maryland and a MS degree from Johns Hopkins. He has been involved with the development of formation testing systems since the early 1980’s, and has published extensively. Proett holds 18 patents, 16 of which deal with well testing and fluid flow analysis methods. He has served on the SPWLA and SPE technical committees and served as the Chairman for the SPE Pressure Transient Testing Committee. He is currently a Senior Scientific Advisor for Halliburton Energy Services in the Strategic Research group.
